Module #3: Practical Reusable Liner Solutions

Facilitator Guide: Menstrual Hygiene & Sustainable Solutions

1. No Single Right Answer, But Hygiene is Key

  • There is no universal solution—both disposable and reusable options have advantages and disadvantages.

  • The most important principle: Staying fresh and clean by changing frequently regardless of the method used.

2. The Environmental Impact of Disposable Pads

  • Disposable pads do not biodegrade, leading to massive waste buildup.

  • Example: If all menstruating women in Iraq used disposable pads, the waste would fill two Burj Khalifas over a lifetime.

  • In Cairo, the volume of menstrual waste could be as large as the pyramids.

  • In regions that prioritize climate awareness, this information can help promote eco-friendly alternatives.

3. Cultural & Economic Realities of Menstrual Products

  • In remote areas (e.g., Siwa, Iraq), disposable pads are not always accessible, leading some women to reuse a single pad for multiple days, which increases health risks.

  • Reusable menstrual solutions are not only for low-income individuals—they provide comfort, sustainability, and long-term cost savings.

4. Hygiene & Comfort Over Product Type

  • Absorbency ≠ Duration of Wear – A pad’s ability to hold 30mL of fluid does not mean one should wait until it is full before changing.

  • Reusable vs. Disposable Absorbency – The key is changing frequently to remain comfortable.

  • Comfort Experiment – A hands-on demo using blindfolded participants to compare fabric softness vs. plastic roughness.

  • Even premium disposable brands market themselves as "cotton soft"—proving that comfort is essential.

5. Understanding & Replicating Menstrual Products

  • Disposable pads have three main layers:

    • A waterproof back sheet

    • An absorbent core

    • A soft top layer

  • Reusable pads mimic this structure but require proper washing and care.

  • Cleaning a reusable pad is safe – It is for personal use, and proper washing removes bacteria.

6. Creating Reusable Pads from Baby Wipes

  • Step-by-step process to make a reusable pad:

    1. Open a packet of baby wipes, remove excess moisture.

    2. Divide the wipes into four smaller stacks.

    3. Wring out each stack to dry them.

    4. Layer three wipes on top of each other, fold in half to form a long rectangle.

    5. When dry, stack two layers together (6 wipes per pad).

    6. The pad stretches up to ~26cm, fitting comfortably inside a t-shirt fabric wrap.

    7. The final pad is soft, absorbent, and nearly unnoticeable when worn.

7. Making Menstrual Solutions Locally Available

  • T-shirts, towels, and mattress protectors can all be upcycled into menstrual products.

  • The best solutions are those available within the community’s lifestyle.

  • Providing education, not just products, ensures sustainability.

Final Thought for Facilitators

This discussion is not about right or wrong but about opening a dialogue on menstrual hygiene. Every woman deserves the choice to stay fresh, clean, and comfortable, whether using disposables or reusables. The goal is to equip participants with knowledge and options so they can make informed decisions.
